Education

We believe that education is one of the most important ways we, as a Foundation and as a society, can reduce the stigma and isolation felt by people with mental illnesses and their families.  We realize, however, that "education" covers a lot of ground; we've tried to pare down the educational information to what you need to know.  To that end, we've included in this Education Section two kinds of information: 1) Information on mental illness education; and 2) Information about mental illness.

The Not Crazy© High School Curriculum on Mental Illness

This curriculum, designed by the Yale Program for Recovery and Community Health, teaches high school students about how to identify mental illness symptoms, what to do when you experience these symptoms, and avenues for treatment and support, with the aim of reducing duration of untreated symptoms and long-term disability.

Educational Programs around the World

While the United States is just beginning to understand the importance of educating the public about mental health issues, other countries in the world have been doing this for years.  We've compiled a list of educational programs available for general use both here in the U.S. and abroad

Information on Mental Illness

This section provides information about specific illnesses (e.g. depression, schizophrenia, anxiety) in order to educate you about signs and symptoms, treatment options, and how to talk to your doctor about what you're experiencing.  We've also included links to more extensive information about these illnesses.

Lexicon of Mental Illness Related Terms

Confused about some of the words we use to describe mental illness?  We've provided a glossary of terms to make information about mental illness issues easier to understand and access.

Recovery from Mental Illness

One of the key elements of mental illness is what happens when you begin to get better.  Connecticut's public mental health system and the Program for Recovery and COmmunity Health is dedicated to supporting people as they journey through recovery from mental illness.  Here, we've provided information on what recovery is, and where you can find more information and support.
